Circular A2Z: Plastic Bank
CIRCULAR ECONOMY

What if plastic waste could lift people out of poverty while protecting our oceans? That’s the vision behind Plastic Bank, founded by David Katz in 2013. By turning plastic into a currency for change, Plastic Bank is proving that waste has value—both for the planet and the people who collect it.

Plastic Bank partners with coastal communities in regions most impacted by plastic pollution, enabling individuals to collect and exchange plastic waste for money, goods, and services. Instead of ending up in our oceans, discarded plastic becomes Social Plastic®—a valuable resource reintroduced into the global supply chain.

Since launching in Haiti, Plastic Bank has expanded to Indonesia, the Philippines, Brazil, Egypt, Thailand, and Cameroon, impacting over 56,000 members across 541 communities. To date, they’ve prevented the equivalent of 7.8 billion plastic bottles from entering the ocean.
As David Katz says, “𝐼 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛’𝑡 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐 𝐵𝑎𝑛𝑘. 𝐼 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑.” His journey is a testament to the power of rethinking waste, reimagining value, and restoring dignity.
"𝐼 𝑠𝑒𝑒 𝑆𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐® 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐵𝑖𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑖𝑛 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡ℎ",
"𝑊𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑒 𝑎 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛" - David Katz.
Let’s embrace solutions that create a circular and inclusive economy! 💚
