Advancing Reuse in Our Cities

Reuse isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Across Canada, innovative startups like Friendlier, ShareWares, Suppli, Reusables.com, and Muuse are proving that diverse models — from deposit-return systems to tech-enabled networks — can make reuse practical, scalable, and impactful.

In Calgary, the opportunity is clear. Festivals, the Stampede, cultural events, sports, and conferences generate massive single-use waste in short bursts. These captive environments are ideal testbeds for reuse, yet challenges remain — from washing infrastructure and entrenched recycling habits to shifting policy landscapes.

To unlock reuse at scale, three pathways stand out:
1️⃣ Partnerships with venues, festivals, and hospitality
2️⃣ Infrastructure for shared washing & logistics hubs
3️⃣ Policy & Culture Shift to move beyond recycling toward reuse-first systems

✨ Reuse is more than containers — it’s about building systems of collaboration, creativity, and circularity that allow cities to thrive sustainably.

For a long time, we’ve lived in a “Take, Make, Waste” world — but there’s a smarter way forward. The Circular Economy flips the script with a simple idea: design out waste.

Instead of throwing things “away,” products get reused, repaired, and reimagined — keeping resources valuable and in play. It’s practical, creative, and yes… a lot more fun than a landfill.

Amongst different circularity strategies, referring to the R-ladder, reuse is the fastest, most scalable way to cut waste — from everyday habits to global business models.

Why it matters:

  • WWF (2024): Reuse systems cut emissions by 65–80% vs single-use.

  • Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2023): Returnable packaging can cut plastic emissions by up to 69% and halve material use.

  • NSW EPA (2023): Reuse saved AU$432M, rehomed 107M items, avoided 343k tonnes CO₂, and created 25× more jobs than recycling.

What you can do:

  • Bring your own cup, bag, or container.

  • Choose refill, rental, or secondhand.

  • Support businesses innovating reuse and take-back.

Reuse isn’t just about saving resources — it’s about circulating value and multiplying impact.
