Circular A2Z: The Ocean Cleanup
CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste pollute our oceans, harming marine life and ecosystems. But what if we could turn the tide on plastic pollution? That’s the mission of The Ocean Cleanup—a pioneering organization developing advanced technologies to remove plastic waste from oceans and prevent it from entering in the first place.
Founded by Boyan Slat in 2013, The Ocean Cleanup is on a mission to remove 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040. Their strategy? A two-pronged approach:
1️⃣ Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) with autonomous cleanup systems that passively collect floating plastic using ocean currents.
2️⃣ Stopping plastic at its source with Interceptor™ systems, which remove waste from the world’s most polluted rivers before it ever reaches the ocean.
♻️ From Waste to Value
The Ocean Cleanup doesn’t just remove plastic—it closes the loop by transforming collected waste into new, valuable products. A great example is 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑑𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑦’𝑠 𝑁𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑏𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝐸𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝐿𝑃 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑎𝑛𝑑'𝑠 10𝑡ℎ 𝑎𝑙𝑏𝑢𝑚 "𝑀𝑜𝑜𝑛 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑐", 𝑚𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐 𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡 𝑃𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝐺𝑎𝑟𝑏𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑃𝑎𝑡𝑐ℎ. This project proves that ocean waste can be repurposed into meaningful, sustainable innovations instead of ending up in landfills or back in the ocean.

Coldplay, known for their commitment to sustainability, partnered with The Ocean Cleanup to sponsor an Interceptor™ named “Neon Moon I”, deployed in Malaysia’s Klang River, one of the most plastic-polluted rivers in the world. This initiative is preventing thousands of kilograms of plastic waste from reaching the ocean, while also using collected plastic to create purpose-driven products like their recycled album.

With dozens of cleanup systems deployed worldwide and partnerships with brands, governments, and changemakers, The Ocean Cleanup is proving that bold ideas and collaborations can drive meaningful environmental change.
Their ultimate goal? To make themselves obsolete—by eliminating the need for ocean cleanups altogether.
