ChopValue was founded by Felix Böck as a startup in Vancouver, Canada. With a background in wood engineering in Germany, he was studying for a PhD in structural bamboo composites in Vancouver when his innovative idea took shape. Böck's moment of inspiration struck during a sushi meal, where he realized the environmental impact of single-use chopsticks.

Combined with the issue of under-utilized wood resources he found from demolished construction sites, repurposing used chopsticks became his humble story to startup ChopValue. Through a process involving cleaning, heat, and pressure, Böck transformed the "waste" chopsticks into well-engineered blocks that could be used as an alternative to wood for furniture and interior decor. This initiative not only reduced waste but also gave the used chopsticks a second life.

Böck outlined four key principles guiding ChopValue's approach:

1. Resource: Transforming "waste" into "resources" to reduce the need to cut down trees.

2. Manufacturing: Utilizing waterless processes and streamlining engineering techniques.

3. Logistics: Implementing "urban harvest" and local production to minimize carbon footprint.

4. Lifecycle: Prioritizing durability and sustainability through high-quality, long-lasting materials and thoughtful design.

ChopValue's mission is to redefine waste as a resource. It collects single-use chopsticks from partner diners and repurposes them into stylish, purposeful items reintroduced into the dining environment. This not only promotes circularity but also fosters community engagement toward a shared meaningful goal. It's a beautiful statement that signifies just the beginning of a meaningful journey.

I was lucky to attend a public event hosted by B Corp in Calgary. I had the opportunity to learn about ChopValue, met the first microfactory owner, who was going to be there. I discovered that ChopValue recognizes the importance of using local resources and production to drive innovation and success in the circular economy. The microfactory Concept is crucial for fostering community growth on a global level and for expanding positive impact.

Life is always a journey - it's always great to see the path when you are looking back for a reason, looking around for a purpose and then to move on. That's why now is our future.
